Behaviour change models for sustainability
Education models: education will lead to awareness and attitude change and then behavioural change
Extrinsic motivation models: human behaviour can be influenced through providing incentives and/or punishments > carrot and stick type model
Intrinsic motivation models: building competence, autonomy or a sense of connectedness and self-motivation can be leveraged in the behaviour change process
Social models: demonstrating that others’ behaviour is both common and responsible can effectively alter behaviour > behaviour of others is s key driver in our own personal change.
- Interesting looking at how we influence behaviour change. SM is well positioned for the education model, the intrinsic motivation model and the social model.
- Interesting also because in the field of communication studies and emphasis is placed on the education model, the transmission of knowledge and ,from what I have read so far, more emphasis could be placed on the intrinsic motivation models and social models.
- We know that social media is both a development of traditional media while also being entirely singular too so analysis that can hold both of these multitudes at once is essential.
Applying behaviour change tools to natural resource conservation and climate action
• Changing behaviour to solve environmental challenges is not in and of itself a new idea.
• Providing information, command-and-control interventions, economic or market incentives (e.g., subsidies, payments, rewards) or disincentives (e.g., taxes, fines) all leverage on human behaviour.
• These interventions are rooted in either the education or extrinsic motivation models of behavioural change.
• Yet, using intrinsic motivations and social models by appealing to emotions, social incentives, and choice architecture can be particularly promising to inspire and enable behaviour change for sustainability
> yet are emotions controllable as seen by CCM? An interesting new frontier nonetheless.
> interesting coming from a photography background where the aim of the medium is to invoke feeling and it is understood that this invoking of feeling triggers change.
